How long does a name written in the sand last, when no one is there to observe it?

Effimero (2026) by Stefano Contiero examines impermanence through the passage of a line. Working across a responsive digital artwork and a CNC plotter drawing in Molochite sand, the work follows a simple proposition: every passage leaves a trace, and no trace remains unchanged. Its title, Italian for “ephemeral,” connects the changing surface to the course of a life.

Broad, segmented paths turn through loops and angular bends, their textured edges giving the digital marks a brushlike character. Bands of color cross one another in compositions that range from open, spare arrangements to dense overlapping fields. The image adapts to screens of different proportions, carrying the same drawing logic into different spaces. The code establishes the route the drawing follows, placing its movement beside the possibility of a predetermined course. Contiero leaves the question of fate unresolved.

In the physical installation, each new path disturbs the marks that came before it. The sand is never smoothed between drawings, so earlier traces accumulate, weaken, and become part of what follows. Molochite provides the friction and legibility needed to make this process visible. The surface holds a history without preserving any one state intact, extending the concern with mutable recollection in Ricordi (2019) into a material process. Here, change takes place in the drawing surface itself.

Created with The Generative Art Museum for Responsive Dreams in September 2026, Effimero pairs the sand drawing with its digital counterpart at Roca Umbert in Granollers, Barcelona. This attention to the physical setting continues an investigation present in Infinito (2022), where an installation made questions of time and existence spatially tangible. Released through Art Blocks as a digital edition of 128, Effimero brings a repeatable computational path into contact with a surface that retains the consequences of every passage. There is no final drawing in which that history comes to rest.
